Barnwell School – a case study

Jackie Johnson (Learning Leader Post 16) saw the local news report of faceREGISTER being installed at another school in the region. Very intrigued Jackie went back to school and discussed it with her management team with a view to installing it for the registration of the sixth form at Barnwell School.

Jackie contacted Aurora and invited them to a meeting where other Stevenage 14-19 Partnership schools were in attendance. Jackie, having been impressed with the presentation, had agreement from the Senior Management Team to install faceREGISTER along with another school in the partnership group, Heathcote School. faceREGISTER was installed during March in preparation for launch with students in the summer term. Students were enrolled and started using faceREGISTER which was being administered by Maria Chapman and Samantha Hicks, both working in the Post 16 office. Knowing that faceREGISTER was a new product both Maria and Sam were delighted to be able to contribute ideas to Aurora for further development. Early teething problems were quickly overcome through goodwill on both sides and the users at Barnwell are happy with the progress made to make faceREGISTER the reliable and efficient system it is now.

Maria and Sam were aware that an upgrade of faceREGISTER was due to write back marks to the school’s management information system, SIMS, in September 09. During September 2009 Barnwell were updated to the SIMS link which made a world of difference by writing attendance marks back to SIMS. When asked about it Sam said, “….we are over the moon with how faceREGISTER populates the AM registers in SIMS” which means that students don’t have to worry about having to attend a specific registration session and consequently wasting student and staff time.

The benefits Barnwell have seen are that tutor time is no longer spent taking the register and can be spent on more focused tutor time. Adminsitration time is saved from having to duplicate late book entries into the MIS system as this is now done automatically via faceREGISTER. Students get more valueable time to study as they feel more responsible for registering themselves without having to go to registration periods.
